Say Cowboy To Me

C&I's Poem of the Week for 1/4/2012

BY SALLY HARPER BATES

If you say the word “cowboy” to me
It evokes a strong memory
Of men that I knew who were tried and true
And paid the cost to ride free

You can argue the word is a noun
An adjective, or a verb
What goes with the title is not just a word
It’s a western degree that is earned.

Like a PHD, BS or MD
There’s a cost in dollars and years
And owning a ranch doesn’t earn the degree
It comes with sweat, pain and peers

A degree that’s earned the hard way
Through manure and dust every day
A true cowboy’s heart is built, it’s not bought
You can’t pick one up on the way

If you own a good rope horse and ride
And own forty acres of pride
That won’t make a hand who rides for the brand
Whose face has the feel of rawhide

Don’t say the word cowboy to me
Unless you know just what it means
A degree that was earned, a trade that was learned
On a diet of beef and beans

I remember our first meeting at the Pretty Penny Ranch 6 years ago, The people who had sold you to my good friend Dee, had said you had major issues with other horses and people and oh by the way--NEVER ever put you in a trailer with any other horse. They had painted a picture of you as if you were a Diabolo. Dee saw straight through their misguided thoughts. She saw an incredible well talented, guardian angel, overfollowing with unconditional love. You weren't a diabolo,you were a "DIVA" with a personality plus.

From the first moment you came to stay with us, you stuck your head inside Greg's truck window-as if to say "HELLO" I'm here to spend the rest of my life with you!!! I will brighten every moment of everyday , I will turn all your frowns upside down,I will show you what life is about !!!! And show us you did. You were always happy and full of spirit and energy!

You enjoyed every minute of work (training) we did. You always put some of your own personality in to it ! Riding you in the show ring or just at home was an incredible feeling-It felt like sitting on top of the world-your Grace-Beauty-Power will be unmatched by any other! When you came to me you were a top "World Class Halter Horse and Top Finisher in many English Classes. I wanted to teach you the western side of competition. I was so impressed with you, if I saddled you english -you instantly new to change your head carriage, the length of your stride(long ground covering movements),when I saddled you western- you instantly carried yourself in a collected manner, with the most incredible 3 beat slow lope I've ever had the pleasure to experience.

YOU WERE INCREDIBLE !!!

I have many wonderful memories of our work together,but one really stands out- I wanted to teach you reining. I had you in the best physical shape any horse could ever be in. When I went to teach you the spin,we started out slow. You thought this was the greatest thing in the world to do. But of course you were having so much fun that when I'd ask for the spin ,you instantly went into a extremely fast flat spin,no matter what direction---the thing is you enjoyed this so much you couldn't wait to do it again. I had to be careful of that cue being anything close to other cues because,Saydee you just flatout loved the spin-any place, anytime.(This was the reining spin,not a spin like a spook.)

Saydee you loved your turnout time. I'd turn you out in the arena or back pasture and you looked like the wildest rodeo horse ever! People would see you and say"You ride that horse? You're crazy,she looks like a keg of dynamite!"

But you were my secret weapon---you had it all-A Super Horse-There will never be another like you ! I feel honored to have been taught by you the meaning of Free Spirit-Unconditional Love-Strength(Power)-an Happiness no matter what we were going through!

Saydee, you only had the best of everything while you were with us. We treated you like the Diva you were. The best stall, blankets,legs wrapped and protected,the best bedding etc. But the one thing I've never done before,with any other horse is share you only with my daughter Samantha. The only ones allowed to ride you were Samantha and I. Samantha knew you the best,she understood you and it made my Heart happy to see the both of you together. So we can say we never had a bad day or a bad ride when we were with you!!

Thank you girl!!!
I will not say GOODBYE, because you have not gone! You will forever be with me. I will use what you taught me-Unconditional Love-Free Spirit-Happiness in all situations-And yes girl,you showed me what life is about.

Robert (Rob) Krentz Douglas rancher was shot and killed Saturday March 27th by a suspected illegal alien.

A rosary will be held at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 211 E. 15th St., Douglas on Friday, April 9th, at 6:00pm. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Catholic Church on Saturday April 10th at 10:00am.

I refuse to watch more unnecessary gathers of healthy horses off of healthy sustainable rangelands, while on the same lands, (claimed to be unsustainable), grazing rights have increased for private livestock.

We have 33,000+ of our nation's wild horses stockpiled in captivity, and a mere 25,000- (and declining) small herds dotted across of western rangelands left, with another 12,000 scheduled for removal by the end of 2010, adding to the current cost to taxpayers of 29-34 (and growing) million to care for captured animals annually. With PROPER and less invasive methods of management, our wild herds cost us minimal in contrast in the wild. I, as a taxpayer and American citizen REFUSE to allow the removal of any more of our American mustangs to be added to the current stockpile of CAPTIVE mustangs, paid for by this nation’s hard working taxpayers.
The American public has made it clear that they want their wild horses “properly managed” on our western frontiers, as originally established on 49 million HMA acres, rather then removing more mustangs, thereby reducing genetic viability at this unsettling and escalated rate. I, along with the many who have already shared their voice and concerns, demand any further mustang removals be stopped until there is a public hearing and investigation held by Congress regarding BLM's management of America's wild horses and burros (which currently are approved only by BLM and DOI). There should also be a moratorium on all gathers until Congress has completed public hearings and an investigation and reached a decision about the appropriate management of these animals consistent with the laws that protect them. It is also my recommendation that prior to any future removals, wild horse and burro specialists, in conjunction with independent and neutral ecologists, must first determine animal health concerns, along with rangeland sustainability reports to justify removals. Since these wild horses BELONG to the American people, a coalition of concerned and involved parties, must be formed to oversee the health the well-being of our Nation’s wild horses and burros.

At some point in time we are all exposed to a good cause. Either a friend, an acquaintance, a relative or a brochure can present us with an organized group who are collecting for their cause. When someone with good intentions and high energy approaches us to promote their needy cause we can get emotionally tangled up. Sooner or later if one does catch our attention and hold our interest we may donate time, money or items for the cause. Before you jump in feet first I suggest some background research. First, does the organizaion have a leader with a defined goal and a plan to achieve the goal. How do current volunteers participate and do they offer a positive and friendly environment. Another way to check out an organization is to see how they participate in the community and which businesses support their cause.

Its a beautiful morning to be Thankful! Friends started calling yesterday and its so great to just hear someones voice! To share the uniqueness between individuals! My family will commune and tradition will follow.

My life is a gift, everyday no matter how many lessons are presented, I understand that God has a great plan for me. I can look back and acknowledge the turns and twists and situations that have led me here!

Today I am just humble and thankful.

Some People Just Don't Get It

I remember the first song I heard from Taylor Swift, "Stay Beautiful" I told my girlfriend, "that song reminds me of your son Ryan" young, handsome, lots of teens calling him and stuff. We commented how cool it was that when most kids were going to school everyday with "blinders" on, Taylor's world was a canvas for her art. Then when I got the CD, I listened and read the credits in amazement! Her talent seperated her from the crowd.

If you have ever had to "write" a school paper like an "essay" then you know just how difficult it is to get the order of the words just right. It takes hours and dedication to perfect and manipulate the English language and rhetoric to express in short concise sentences!

Next, I want to praise Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, for understanding the concept of "artistic expression". Their ability to step forward and support Taylor Swift brings credibility to the situation. McGraw and Hill, write, perform, produce and move in the music industry so they understand how hard Taylor Swift works. I give them big kudos for stepping up! Supporting Taylor just shows me that McGraw and Hill are real people with their "egos" in check. I saw how Taylor hugged them when they presented her the award. Its people like them who will help her keep the "stardom" at bay and continue to be herself.

In my opinion, when someone critizes another person, they are acting from a "closed" position in the universe. There is enough room to love and to honor someone so talented.

Unfortunately, there will always be someone in the crown that has to go to the dark side!

So thats my little rant about Taylor Swift. I think she is an inspiration. She has the ability to write songs that let other people know they are not alone in those feelings. Right now I think alot of youngsters need someone to lead them in a healthy and positive direction and I believe her songs are just that help.

Arizona Cowboy Symposium

One great advantage about living in Arizona is the access to our rich Western History. We have several cities that boast our rich Cowboy culture in their Architectural Style, Cultural Landscape and Social Events. One such event is happens yearly, the second week in November. This year, the Arizona Cowboy Symposium http://www.arizonacowboysymposium.org/ - will hold "A Western Heritage Event" at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Sonoita Arizona.

Friday and Saturday 10 am - 5 pm and Sunday 10 am - 4 pm.

Their will be Western Entertainment, Music, Dancing, Food and Trade Vendors.

If you are interested in staying for the weekend, their will be camping available. I would check the website.

The drive from Tucson is a beautiful drive that leaves the Sonoran Desert as you slowly climb into some beautiful grasslands spattered with scrub oak and small ranches.
