Sizing Horse Boots, Sneakers, Barefoot Horse

Well, I wanted to link this blog to this wonderful service page I found for used Horse Boot for sale and found out this morning that the page had to be removed due to spammers..... However, I am going to post the work because it is so informative and helpful.

I am including her email gretchen.fathauer@hughes.net
where she offers a PDF dowload to contact her.

"I am providing this page to help boot buyers and sellers connect as a free public service. I am not responsible for the conduct of the buyers or sellers, nor for the quality of the merchandise. I don't personally know the majority of the people who advertise here."

"Boot Swap Page--find a buyer for boots you got in the wrong size!
Boots are a temporary fix, and not an ideal substitute for bare hooves that have gradually adapted to hard, rocky ground. There are necessarily going to be trade-offs and compromises in any boot. Leaving them on for days at a time can create other problems, such as thrush and softening of the hooves. Poor boot fit can create rubbing problems, etc. I see them as useful for being able to work horses on surfaces they have not yet acclimated to, such as horses living on soft surfaces wearing boots to enable working them on gravel roads. Boots also have value in some rehabs, especially in cases of sole penetration. Soaking boots have a place in replicating daily exposure of hooves to water that horses living in the wild get when they stand in streams to drink. Soaking boots can also be used to medicate conditions such as thrush.

Common boot sizes:Width is widest part of the hoof. Length is from toe to the backs of the heels, but NOT heel bulbs. You are measuring a footprint.(Click on thumbnail photos to see larger versions.)"

Soft-Ride boots and insoles (A superior hospital-type boot with insoles of 5 densities available. I do not recommendthe dual density insole. In many cases you may want to shave off the frog support. Theinsoles' heels are slightly thicker than the toes. In cases where there is a real sole deficitin the toe, you could reverse the pads and raise the toes more than the heels to get aground-parallel coffin bone once the frog support is shaved off level with the rest of thepad. Order primarily by width. Their orthotics also fit into Cavallo Simple boots.More info: 866-763-8743 .) http://www.soft-ride.com

Horse Owners Guide to Natural Hoof Care
by Jaime Jackson
This book is by another barefoot guru. It's directed at the layperson who wants to trim their own horses the natural way, but professionals should read it, too.
Amazon Price: $19.77 (as of 09/19/2008)

"The greatest advantage is to hoof health. By leaving a horse barefoot, one allows the hoof's natural functions of shock absorption, traction, and biomechanics to perform at their optimum. Shoes inhibit natural function and the horse's natural way of going, and limb interference with shoes can cause injury." ---Debora Ash, American Farrier's Association (AFA) certified farrier, BHS assistant instructor, and co-author and publisher of Study Guides (to aid farriers for AFA national certification examinations)
"The foot was designed to be unshod. Anything that you add to the foot, like a horseshoe that is nailed on, is going to interfere with the foot's natural process. Most horseshoes have six to eight nails, possibly one to three clips, all of which constrict the foot's ability to expand and contract. Add pads, packing, any number of alternatives to the shoe, and you create a gait alteration. It all interferes with the natural process of the mechanism. Ideally, for the foot to work the way it's been designed through evolution to work, you'd rather do less than more to the foot. But that may or may not be a realistic wish."---Emil Carre, AFA president, AFA certified journeyman farrier, and a consulting editor for Hoofcare and Lameness magazine. _________________________________________________________
"Trimming barefoot riding horses demands a higher level of intuition and competency. A horseshoe or a hoof boot can hide even the most serious errors in judgement (for a while). A mistake on a barefoot riding horse will tell on you in a heartbeat!" --Pete Ramey, "Making Natural Hoof Care Work for You"
